These dogs quickly became the favorite of the Victorian aristocracy, but their origin goes back to the working class.
During that time the coal mines of northern England were plagued by rats, which is why the miners sought dogs that were small, agile and skilled at hunting these creatures.

As a result of the crossbreeding of these dogs, the Yorkshire Terrier was born.
The breeds that are considered to be predecessors of the Yorkie are:
- Skye Terrier.
- Paisley Terrier.
- Manchester Terrier.
- Bichon Maltese.
